Revl will benefit from the core competencies of big giants like Sony, Ambarella, and Frog Design to compete against GoPro, Nikon, and other rivals.
Revl Inc., a startup consumer electronics firm based in Califronia, seeded $2 million funds to compete against GoPro with its own smart digital camera for action photography. The seeding session was led by Bill Tai, while a number of renowned investors participated in the event. These included Frog Ventures, Y Combinator, James Lindenbaum (founder of Heavybit Industries), and Lars Rasmussen (Google Maps co-founder), reported VentureBeat.
The company has claimed that its waterproof digital cameras record stable videos like never before. Reportedly, its cameras also provide great results, even if they’re placed on unstable surfaces such as skier’s helmet or a kiteboard.skier’s helmet or a kiteboard.
Revl was founded by Eric Sanchez, who previously worked as an engineer at Sikorsky Aircraft. He has always been passionate about action photography and has an active interest in kite surfing. His passion led him to create one of the most stabilized action cameras. Mr. Sanchez claimed that his product is embedded with high end electronic sensors and chips, which enables it to offer a lot more than other professional cameras in the market. Additionally, the company has a few corporate alliances with Sony, Frog Design, and Ambarella. It also has an edge over advanced electronic chips and sensors that it embeds in its products.
The company would also offer a unique app, which will let users edit videos from mobile devices. The app will be able to edit relevant portions from the videos just by analyzing user’s queries.
Mr. Sanchez said that his company would provide apt solutions for enhanced user experience with a keen focus on stabilization, contrary to the trend of high-resolution pictures and 360-degree videos. He said: “the rest of the action camera industry is moving towards higher-resolution pictures, and 360-videos. We’re solving a more immediate user experience problem with a focus on stabilization.”
Experts believe that industry leaders such as GoPro and Nikon will compete fiercely with Revl. The newly-created camera may face notable rivalry from Steadicam as well, which develops smartphone peripherals for better video experience. Further speculations suggest that the new firm might make its own camera peripherals in the future. However, it won’t be easy for the company to outperform the supplementary camera products pre-available in the market. GoPro and Nikon will compete fiercely with REVL.
